How do I get my 11 month old baby to sleep through the night?

curious - 2006-01-17 16:58:21 - Newborn Baby

I have an 11 month old baby that still wakes up a couple of times a night and needs to be breast fed before she will go back to bed. She slept through for a few nights but we have been travelling quite a bit with her (visiting family in other provinces and in Europe), and I think her sleep schedule is all messed up. Can you let me know if you had a similar problem, and what you did to fix it?. Please respond only people that had that problem.

My baby girl slept through the night for the first time just last night. She is almost seven months. We've been slowly working at it for over a month. Be sure to have a CONSISTANT bedtime ritual. I cannot stress this enough. We have bathtime, lotion massage, maybe a story depending on how tired she is, nurse her, and then stand up with her in the nursing position but with a pacifier in her mouth for a couple of minutes but don't let her fall asleep and then put her in her crib. I say "time to go to sleep, I love you" and walk out of the room. This is the critical part. She will almost always start crying. I let her cry for 5 min, then go back and tell her I'm near, put her pacifier back in (this will be the next habit to tackle so if you aren't using a pacifier just ignore this), maybe touch her belly but do not pick her up, and then walk out of the room again. She'll probably be crying still but don't go back in there for ten more minutes. Keep extending the time period by five minutes. She'll feel safe and know that you are near and eventually fall asleep. You have to do this every time she wakes up in the middle of the night so it's usually best to start on a friday night or you'll have a very tired week. If the dad is able to have him help as much as possible because your baby can sense you and wants you to pick him/her up. The reason it took us over a month is because I was only increase the minutes by like 2-3 in between going in there so I'd go in there at 5 min, 7 more min, 10 min after that, 13... but it works! For my friends (I live on a military base.. lots of friends with babies), who actually wait the full 5 minute incraments say it only takes about 3-4 nights to work! CRAZY! GOOD LUCK!

I had the problem, and there is no solution, some kids will sleep through the night and others wont. you need to wait for him/her to out grow it. around 1 and a half to 2 years of age.

I had this problem with my son after going out of country. The best advice I can give you is to keep the lights low while you feed her and don't talk to her any more than you have to. If you do need to talk to her only whisper. It lets her know that it is night time and not time to be up and moving. Good luck!!

you might try feeding her real food a short time before bed as real food will be more filling and last longer...maybe a meal then a warm bath worked for mine

My son is 19 months now and since he was about 6 months and I've succeeded into teaching him to sleep throughout the night. Yes teaching him (this I learnt from one of the books I read.) You have to teach your kid to sleep throughout the night because just like an adult he might awaken in the middle of the night but adults just send themselves back to sleep and a baby should learn to do that. You help him by not carrying him when he awakes, nor feed him, nor patting his back or rocking his bed just sit still and let him go back to sleep. First night will be the worst of all, he might cry for several minutes but will eventually go back to sleep, next day he will wake up crying but it will take less time till he falls back to sleep and so on until he will eventually not cry at all but will learn to go back to sleep if he is awakened in the middle of the night and should take less than a week to teach him.
